Synopsis of “Long Distance Call”:

On Christmas Day, Alice, a young woman, calls her little sister Vic, thousands of miles away. They’re arguing about Alice stealing her boyfriend’s hidden engagement ring. As they argue, the scars of life come out, and masks come off.

What is Cinematics Arts Miramar ?

A screen arts residency program developed by the French Embassy in New Zealand in partnership with  Victoria University of Wellington/Te Herenga Waka - Miramar Creative Centre.

Once a year, a screen artist specialized in cinema and video games industries, based in France, is offered the opportunity to work and create in Wellington.

To be selected, the project must offer the possibility of collaboration between France and New Zealand and contribute to the emergence of innovative audio-visual cinematic creation.

More about Shih-Yen Huang :

Originally from Taiwan, Shih-Yen Huang has lived and worked in France since 2013.

Exploring the manifestation of violence in human relationships through objects and space, Shih-Yen Huang constantly navigates this precarious, yet hauntingly poetic journey.

After obtaining a degree in Oil Painting from the National Taiwan Normal University in

Taipei, and a diploma from the Beaux-Arts in Tourcoing, Shih-Yen Huang continued her training at the École Nationale Supérieure des Arts Décoratifs in Paris, specializing in animated film, from which she graduated with honors in 2020.

Her film La Confiture de Papillons (2021) (« Butterfly Jam ») was selected for over 70 film festivals and won 16 awards.

Shih-Yen Huang will follow in the footsteps of Ana Maria de Jesus, the first Cinematic Arts Miramar (CAM) laureate, and will be joining the residency in September 2024. This artistic residency will be an opportunity for her to work on her animated short film Long Distance Call.
